The project was part of a design for a civic centre in Hampstead with Townhall, swimming pool and other office buildings. Only two buildings were constructed and were soon regarded as a seminal works by the architect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\" ... one of Spence's most accomplished civic buildings, and amongst the most ambitious architectural designs for a library found anywhere.'\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe building is now Grade II Listed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Spence-designed bench, desks and tables were removed as part of a refurbishment in 2005.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe flat-bar stainless steel base echoes the key architectural features of the outside of the building and strictly linear elements within the interior from the glazing, through spiral staircases, ceiling panels and railings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe front and side elevation of the base are in fact separate and a narrow shadow gap exists to create an elegant solution to the two meeting at 90 degrees.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original vinyl upholstery is in good order.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bench is a rare furniture design, with exceptional provenance, by one of Britain’s most important and influential architects.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":null,"offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":40830000431215,"sku":"991263","price":900.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0032\/4966\/8207\/products\/vintage-sir-basil-spence-bench-1964-5.jpg?v=1653040929","url":"https:\/\/www.twentytwentyone.mom\/products\/vintage-sir-basil-spence-site-specific-bench-1964","provider":"twentytwentyone","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
