robin-day-hillestak-desk-1950
Robin Day | Hillestak desk | 1950

A rare and early Hillestak desk. This example is constructed with an exotic and decorative hardwood veneer to the table top. The solid beech lipping and leg structure are standard, however the suspended drawer unit is quite different to documented examples. The use of solid and veneered hardwood for drawer pulls and carcass contrast strongly with the beech drawer-fronts. The later production for the drawer unit tended to be all-beech and with recessed drawer pulls that married with the Hilleplan range of 1952. This variant expresses a very strong dynamic with figured top and two-tone drawer-set.

The Hillestak family was developed from the desire for Hille to supply a cost-effective, plywood dining chair. The stacking chair proved to be a commercial success and alongside the chair came a table and a desk. The desk was focussed towards a residential market and sold in much smaller quantities than the stacking table and multipurpose chair.

Dimensions
130w x 61d x 71cmh
